ARTICLE ADMIRAL’S CUP INTERNATIONAL REGATTA 2017

The competition for the Admiral’s Cup International Regatta which is one of the biggest military event where Naval Academies across the world participated. The prestigious annual sailing event had been hosted by Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala. The 8th edition of the Admiral’s Cup was held at Marakkar Watermanship Training Center (MWTC) in INA from 02nd until 08th Dec 17. There were Officers Under Training (OUT) from 27 countries involved in this regatta in Laser Radial class sailing boats and has the largest contingent teams from the foreign countries on this year.

The event became competitive and more exciting as the years pass by, as the number of countries came to participate in the event kept growing. The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) participated in the Admiral’s Cup all this while, and particularly this year RMN was represented by Lieutenant Nik Ashraf Thaqid bin Nik Azizan RMN (from KD DUYONG) as a RMN Team Leader, Midshipman Muhammad Anwar bin Ibrahim and Midshipman Muhammad Naaim bin Salleh (both from KD SULTAN IDRIS 1) as a RMN Participants. The event fostered bridges of friendships between navies with social activities held off the water, as well as being a showcase for the INA and the diverse Indian culture. The Admiral’s Cup for the best overall team was won by Team USA whilst Team Malaysia performed admirably, noting the light breezes, with a final placing of 11th.

“This event is more than a competition, it is also a platform to learn and understand the way various countries work and train. During the regatta, RMN participants have an exchange of knowledge session and also ample opportunity to get to know each other. They also established the network among participants for future cooperation. These openings can enhance OUT experience at an international level and enriched boat handling skill to make a magnificent sailor,” said RMN Team Leader.

Besides that, the participants were also involved in other activities apart from sailing regatta which included visit INA’s training and sports facilities, track to Mount Dilli, horse riding, golf and cultural packages showcasing India’s rich traditions, languages, cultures and art forms. The 8th edition of Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta concluded on 7th Dec 17 at a glittering Closing Ceremony at MWTC. Vice Admiral AR Karve, AVSM, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command was the chief guest for the closing ceremony and presented the “Admiral’s Cup” and individual prizes to the winners.
