RMN VOLUNTEER RESERVE TRAINING

Generally, the exercises implemented for members of RMNVR are aim to enable them to carry out RMNVR roles and tasks. In addition, planned exercises can shape the personality of officers and staff to be physically and mentally prepared to be deployed when the situation is needed.

GENERAL CONCEPT OF TRAINING

Training for Navy Volunteers should be tailored to the time and capacity of volunteers. Therefore, there are several options that can be considered when a Reserve unit is planning a training. Among them are:

     a. Training was conducted in the evening of 1800 after the work of the public sector.
     b. Exercise at the weekend.
     c. Exercise at out-time work for them in shift work.
     d. Conducting exercises in the right place for most voluntary members.
     e. The coach goes to the training site and is not a volunteer to go to the coach.
     f. The planned training does not impose voluntary or employer membership.

TYPES OF TRAINING

The training given is based on the roles and tasks that will be played by them when needed. Their roles and duties have been set by the services as envisaged in Chapter 2. The types of training to be carried out are as follows: 

BASIC TRAINING:

Divided into 4 types of training namely, RMNVR Officer, ROTU, Enlisted Soldiers of RMNVR and PLAS.

a. Soon-to-be RMNVR Officer. As RMNVR Officer, they have to perform basic training for 2 years. The Training of RMNVR Officer is implemented according to RMN Officer Cadet Scheme. The training is divided into 6 phases; 3 phases a year. Phase 1, 2, 4 and 5 are implemented in their own units, while Phase 3 and 6 at KD SULTAN IDRIS I, RMN Base, Lumut and RMN ships. All of them need to pass each specified phase to qualify for the accreditation. Summary of Basic Training of PSSTLDM Officer is as below:

b. ROTU. ROTU officers needs to undergo basic training for a period of 3 years. Their first year will be promoted as Officer Cadet and Senior Cadet Officer in the 2nd and 3rd year. They will also undergo training in 6 phases similar to the PSSTLDM Officer. The difference is that they will complete all phases within 2 years before they are eligible to be accredited. Summary of ROTU officers Basic Training (IPTA) and PALAPES-ALAM is in the table below:

c. Enlisted Soldiers of RMNVR and PLAS. The enlisted man of RMNVR and PLAS should undergo basic training for a period of 6 months. The Basic Course training is divided into 4 phases. The entire training will be conducted at RMNVR units including 2 weeks at RMNVR Training Center, at KD SRI PINANG. They need to pass this basic course before being eligible to be awarded the Seaman Rank. Summary of Training Exercises is shown in Table below:

UNIT TRAINING

Officers and enlisted soldiers of RMNVR must follow 3 types of training namely Local Parade, Continuous Training and Annual Camp. The explanation of each exercise is as follows:

  1. Local Parade. Means weekly training exercised in the PSSTLDM unit within a period of not less than 2 hours and not exceeding 12 hours a day. Commanding Officer at each units, with the approval of RMN HR - Reserve will set the appropriate days and times to be selected as day and time of training in their respective units. The meals will be provided for training which is more than 10 hours a day.
  2. Continuous Training. Means training, classes or on-the-job training within a period of not less than 72 hours. This training does not specify the maximum duration of days. Therefore, RMN HR - Reserve is responsible for controlling and approving the training.
  3. Annual Camp. Means continuous training for a period not exceeding 15 days. The meals are provided throughout the training period. This training can be conducted by the RMNVR unit upon approval from RMN HR - Reserve. 

CONTINUOUS TRAINING

Exercises that are permissible in the sense of Continuous Training are as follows:

a. Exercise. It is a team-designed workout for a particular group or individual who is considered necessary to undergo Continued Exercise continuously within a period of not less than 72 hours for a specified period. This exercise must have an objective to be achieved. This exercise is usually a collective training on the ship,exercises on missed lessons in the weekly training, the exercise that need to be repeated to reach the level of skill or training in preparation for a course. Members who will follow this exercise are determined by the coach after evaluating someone's achievement and not anyone who wishes to follow. Therefore, the presence of continuous training is confirmed first and only the relevant members will be present.

b. Tasking. The assignable task is reasonable and in the interest of the service. Tasks are not for the benefit of the service or may be exercised by permanent members in the team will not be allowed. Tasks may be made individually or in groups, but the tasks must be continued no less than 72 hours. This means that the task of an individual or group is continuous day or night within a minimum of 72 hours.
